“Hills Like White Elephants” takes place in a train station, surrounded by hills, in Spain. The main characters consist of a man known as the “American Man” and his girlfriend he calls “jig”. During this story the couple sits at a table just outside the station. The American Man orders two beers and his girlfriend states “the hills look like white elephants” (Hemingway 689). The man claims he has never seen one (689). At this time the American Man orders two more drinks (689). The couple begins to bicker about the taste of the alcohol. the operation, and everything will be perfect like it had been before. The American man also professes his care for Jig.
At this point in the story I conclude that the operation is an abortion. What caused me to come to this conclusion is the talk the couple has about still loving each other after the operation and all there problems being solved. I feel the baby is the problem and the abortion is the solution. I also feel like the abortion is wanted more by the American man then Jig because throughout the story she seems saddened, but the American man doesn't. What causes me to think she is sad are a few actions she does. These actions consist of looking at the ground, and taking hold of the two beads from the beaded curtain while being silent. I feel that once she has the abortion the relationship will continue. I do recognize there is love between the couple.
