From humankind’s emergence into modern times, people have been
resistant to change of any kind. Once a group of people incorporate an
idea into their society, it becomes ingrained in every heart, mind, and
soul. Those individuals who question what society has embraced become
social outcasts shunned by their peers. Often these free thinkers are
punished for simply admitting that they do not wholeheartedly believe as
their friends and neighbors do. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by
Mark Twain, one such individual, namely the title character, begins to

Huck envisions between himself and Jim becomes increasingly fainter.
Society and its mores seem extremely distant and remote from the simple yet

Just as slavery was an almost universally recognized practice in
Huckleberry Finn’s world, the supposed inferiority of women has been an
accepted idea in more recent times. Into the twentieth century a woman was
not considered an equal member of American society. The traditional role
of a woman as a wife, a mother and a housekeeper remained unquestioned
until World War I. Those few women and men who strove for equality between
