The Ambivalent Relationship Of Nick And Gatsby

The story of The Great Gatsby as told through Nick Carraway is one
of love, hatred, scandals, lies, and cover-ups. With Nick as the narrator,
readers get a biased look at the characters, through Nick’s judgmental
descriptions. His hatred for mankind is evident in what he says, thinks,
and how he acts (Donaldson 132).
Nick thinks Gatsby is despicable. Even though Nick doesn’t know
much about Gatsby except for rumors he’s heard from Gatsby’s uninvited
party guests, he doesn’t believe Gatsby’s stories of his life in Europe.
While Nick is listening to Gatsby’s historically untrue story he begins to
understand why Gatsby’s guests feel he is an insidious person. “He hurried

in his mind. “Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an
unaffected scorn.” (6)
Carraway is curious about Gatsby, he can’t quite figure out whether
or not Gatsby is lying because Gatsby resists classification (Donaldson134).
Nick can almost forgive Gatsby for going after Daisy because of his
extraordinary commitment to his dream(Donaldson137). Nick isn’t able to
grasp the depth and intensity of Gatsby’s dream (Donaldson 138). Gatsby
belongs to a vanished past (Ornstein 64). He is set apart by his “
heightened sensitivity.” (6) (Searles 1) Jimmy Gatz inherited a diluted
version of the American Dream of success, a more moral and elegant dream
fit for a country arriving at the respectability of established wealth and
