The Awakening

is a story of a woman’s struggles to overcome innumerable obstacles in her life. Edna, the primary character in the story, discovered the stifling bonds of marriage and realized and surpass her limitations as a female in a male dominated society. She also became aware of her means to happiness in such an oppressive society.

to her father, she should go out of “womanly consideration”. And as most wives unconditionally obeyed their husbands, Edna often refused her husband’s wishes from simple matters of merely meeting him downtown to more complex issues such as her Tuesdays at home.
Through her struggles, Edna came to understand her means to happiness. She realized that an abundance of material things as were in her husbands home did not please her and in fact added to her continually deepening depression so she moved to the more cozy ‘pigeon-house”. Edna also discovered that simplicity made her happy as well and thus often embarked on quiet walks, lounged in the gardens of the coffeehouse, and relaxed by drawing and painting. Robert was the one thing that truly made Edna happy and when she realized she could not have him she saw all of life’s promises broken and therefor no reason to continue her own life.
