Jack London was born in San Francisco, a working class family, on January 12, 1876. In 1885 London, when he was only 9 years old, found and read Ouida's long Victorian novel Signa. He credited this as the seed of his literary success. Later, London became hired as a member of the California Fish Patrol. After many experiences as a hobo and a sailor, he returned to Oakland and attended Oakland High School. He contributed a number of articles to the high school's magazine. London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics.
The Call of the Wild £¬which was published in 1903, is a novel written by American author Jack London. This is one of London's most-read novels, even it is considered his best. It is sometimes classified as a juvenile novel because the hero of the story is a dog, however, we can see easily from the novel that the tone is dark and there are a number of scenes of violence and cruelty.

John Thornton, an experienced outdoorsman who notices that all of the sled dogs are in terrible shape from the ill treatment of their handlers.
