On a damp November afternoon in 1863, Abraham Lincoln -then president of the United States of three years- gave a speech to dedicate a battlefield of the Civil Wars as a memorial for the soldiers killed there in July of 1863. It was basic, routine US President stuff. Little did anyone attending that ceremony know, the speech President Lincoln gave would go down as one of the most popular, frequently referenced, and identifiable speeches in the history of American culture.

government had deftly skirted the issue. Usually the easy answer was saying ‘let the states figure it out individually.’ Kind of like the gay marriage issue in modern times. Rather than risk doing something wildly unpopular, they just avoided the question all together. But with the rapid westward expansion of the mid-19th century, it quickly became a federal issue.
Congress, incapable of reaching a satisfying solution, decided the only logical solution was to dissolve the nation and have each state go its separate way. On December 20th, 1860, South Carolina became the first state to declare it was no longer part of the US. On March 4th, 1861, Lincoln became president, and inherited the mess from his predecessor, James Buchanan. On April 11th, 1861, rebel forces attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.
