The Civil War


was mainly started because of the issue of slavery. The South wanted the right to have slavery in the West, but the North didn't want it to spread to the West. Since they couldn't agree they became very angry and started the war between the states.

In 1860, on December 20, South Carolina seceded from the Union. Because South Carolina was the only state that seceded, representatives from South Carolina were sent to talk to other Southern states to get them to secede from the Union and start their own country.

On February 4, the seceding states met in Montgomery, Alabama. There, they formed the Confederate States of America. They also made Montgomery their capital. They wrote a constitution, chose a legislature, and elected a president. The president that was elected was Jefferson Davis from Mississippi, and a vice-president, Alexander Stephens.

Jefferson Davis was born in 1808 in Christian County, Kentucky. As a boy he grew up in Mississippi and went to a catholic school. Then he went to Transylvania University in 1821 and graduated at West Point in 1828. After school he joined the army and served in the Black Hawk War, which was the last Indian and White Man War east of the Mississippi River.

After that he married the daughter of Zachary Taylor, Sarah Kneex Taylor. After his wife's death in September of 1835, Jefferson bought a plantation in Mississippi and enters politics. In 1845, he married again to ...
