I definitely suffer from sleep deprivation. At the beginning of the school I was alternating 4 hours of sleep a night, with none at all. However, staying up all night to finish a paper or to study for an exam is not uncommon among high school and college students. A few months ago, I decided to research a little and found statistics that reflects what a growing problem sleep deprivation is for our country. According to the Gallup Poll conducted for the National Sleep Foundation, one out of every two people suffers from sleeplessness at some point in their lives, many of them chronically. Perhaps the most obvious effect sleeplessness has on a person is the negative energy balance. This occurs because the thyroid hormone expends more energy than is actually being metabolized. Your body is using more energy, than would normally be restored by sleeping. People who get less than the suggested number of hours of sleep tend to be less alert and attentive, and more inclined to irritability and other mood problems. Despite this, sleep deprivation has an inconsistent impact on a person’s performance. The quality and efficiency of work depends more so on the amount of sleep lost and the nature of the task at hand.
