The Crucible: Abigail’s Revenge



In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a group of girls are
caught dancing in the woods, which is thought to be the devils last reserve,
full of mystery, and those that went there were thought to not be paying
homage to God. After this incdent the once quiet town of Salem was
suspected of witchcraft. Abigail William’s contributes to the witchcraft
hysteria because she was one of the girls dancing in the woods attempting
to make a charm to kill someone, and throughout the course of the play she
will do anything to obtain what she wants, not caring who she hurts in the
process.

Abigail is like the leader of the girls, they follow what she says,
without a word edgewise. Her cousin ...

“Shut it! Now shut it!” Betty: (collapsing on the
bed). “Mama, Mama!” (she dissolves into sobs.) Abigail: “Now look you.
All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters.
And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the
edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black
of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will
shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’
heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done
at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down! (she
goes to BETTY and roughly sits her up.) Now, you-sit up and stop this!”
(But BETTY collapses in her hands and lies inert on the bed)(Miller, 72).
Abigail does not want anyone to find out what they have done and by this
story she believes she has nothing to worry about as long as no one speaks
of it.
