The Crucible


by Arthur Miller is a play about the chaos and deceit that occurs under the pressure of a witch-hunt in Salem, Massachusetts. A crucible is an instrument found in science labs that is used to filter out solids from liquid compounds. The book was named after this object because the Salem witch trials were an attempt to filter out the truth in the chaos of the trials. After the discovery of several village girls, including Betty Parris, Ruth Putnam, and Abigail Williams, dancing and chanting in the woods, rumors of witchcraft sweep Salem Village and everybody gets caught up in them. Reverend Parris stated that the village was talking of witchcraft and Proctor said, "Then let you come out and call them wrong", clearly expressing that he did not believe them. When hysteria about the witch trials first reached him he replied to Reverend Hale, "There are them that will confess to anything before they'll hang; have you ever thought of that?" Throughout the chaos of the trials, while hundreds confessed to being witches, John Proctor was persistent in his idea that everyone who confessed was lying in order to avoid getting hanged. It came as no surprise that when his maid, Mary Warren, who participated in the dancing, mentioned that his wife was accused of witchcraft he set out to let the court know that was not true.
