The Dead: A Necessary Introduction

James Joyce’s The Dead opens with an annual get together of family and friends. Some readers question the necessity of this opening sequence. Most of the characters have little or no significance to the final result of the story. However, through their interaction and communication, the reader is introduced to the characters and the setting. The long introductory scene is a necessary piece of the story, in that it allows the reader to embrace, positively or negatively, the main character, Gabriel, and experience the various emotions that he feels as The Dead reaches its climax.

Gabriel blushes immediately. He feels bad for bringing it up, and tosses her a coin in thanks, and as an indirect apology. He then rushes away to avoid further discussion, and perhaps his guilt as well.
The reader also discovers very quickly that Gabriel is very well educated. He is to give a speech at the dinner table, and he struggles with whether or not he should include certain poetic and academic references. He feels that he will appear superior to the guests, and that his speech will be misunderstood, or not understood at all. He is conscious of the feelings of the people around him.
In our class, readers are ignorant towards the political views of the people of this era, as these opinions are not provided in the text. It seems, however, that Gabriel is more liberal than some of the other guests at the party. He is accused of being a "West Briton", by Miss Ivors, for writing a literary column in "The Daily Express". Gabriel is not, as Miss Ivors suggests he should be, ...
