The Drug Enforcement Administration or the DEA has been around since its advent July 1, 1973. It was founded by Richard Nixon in order to fight drug smuggling within the United States and enforcing the Controlled Substances Act. They also conduct all U.S. drug investigations. The DEA's main goal was to drop the overall crime rate surrounding drugs while also spreading drug awareness. It is a federal agency which thus means that they do not enforce local or state laws but instead deal with serious, federal crimes.
