The Emergence Of Ghettos


Cities emerged during the Industrial Revolution period; this was a time where technology was advancing. Within the cities ghettos were born. A ghetto is section of a city where members of a minority group are segregated. Mainly lower class social economic status, and welfare receipts dwell in this area. More importantly, this is where blacks had to live. Businesses, urban problems and immigration are all related because they contributed to the development of ghettos.
Businesses in the cities were mostly factories. The factories owners would bring the blacks up from the south by railroads. They would use the blacks as “cheap labor” in the factories. This caused a problem for the whites. The ...

and into the ghettos. More importantly, blacks were competition to the whites for jobs. During the 1900-1920 time period racial violence broke out in major cities around the nation. Riots took cities by storm. Blacks that lived in white neighborhoods had their homes blown up. Blacks were being thrown off of trolleys on their way to work. This was all due to the fact that the blacks were taking over the whites job for a lesser paycheck. In addition to racial violence, real estates were a problem for the blacks that were living in the ghettos. Restrictive Covenaces was a form that stated that no houses should be sold or rented to blacks. If 75 percent of the neighborhood signed this form, it was accepted as a legal document. Also, the Neighborhood Associations stop blacks from moving into white neighborhoods. These associations would stop real estates from selling houses to blacks. They would lobby for public investment, so they can buy out the blacks that had moved into the white ...
