The Epic of Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is considered the world’s oldest epic. We normally think of the Greek epics as superior to Gilgamesh, but it is important to look at the beginnings of our literary tradition.

Who is the hero in this epic tale? Many literary scholars argue that Enkidu actually exhibits more heroic qualities than Gilgamesh. Others argue the opposite, that Gilgamesh is the true epic hero.
