The Fog in Dickens' and Goodwin's Writing

Notions and events can be expressed through various methods. For example, the age old case of a glass of water can be expressed as being half empty, or half full, depending on the veiwer and how he or she wishes to communicate the current state of the glass. Nevertheless, they are, in the end, describing the same thing-a glass of water. The same idea can be applied to the case of the potent London fog during the prime of industrial Britian. Both Goodwin, and Dickens, though their organization, diction, and syntax, aim their works to communicate a sense of the omnipresence of the fog that has engulfed London at the time, even if their excecution is through different means.

Goodwin relys on factual cases and data, such as "400 deaths" and "18 percent less sunshine" to give the reader the sense of how severe and lasting the fog is. On the other hand, Dickens follows a different method to convay a simmilar sense. One will not find any case studies, real life scenarios, or any factual evidence in Dicken's peice, which were highly apparent in the perivious one; it is simply not necessary. Where Goodwin organizes his passage through exeplification, Dicken's does so through description. He describes the vastness of the London fog by artfully stating the various places that is occupies. "Fog on the heights, fog creeping into the cabooses...on the yards...ships...throats." By describing the various places where fog is present, Dickens, like Goodwin, gives the reader a sense of its lasting prescence in london, not by bringing up examples, but by painting a picture of what London was like in the minds of the ...
