The Giver

The Pale Eyes

One of the symbolisms of the pale eyes is that, almost everyone in the story that possessed the eyes was considered special. Taking Jonas, Gabriel, and the Giver into consideration, they all had something in common which were the pale eyes and they each played a very important role in the story. Jonas’ role in the story was to be a receiver, the Giver’s role in the story was to act as a means of transfer of the memories to Jonas, and Gabriel’s role in the story was to act as a means of Jonas accessing the memories he received from the Giver. From reading the story, I found four statements made in the book that supports my ideology.

in the story when Jonas had recognized that the Giver had the same pale eyes he had when he met him on the first day of his training as a receiver.
“Almost every citizen in the community had dark eyes” (P.20). Though the adults in the community were given important assignments in the community, not all of them were considered to be special. Taking Jonas as the receiver into consideration, he was picked to be the next Giver, which was the most important assignment in the community. Picking Jonas as the next ‘Giver’ in the story was so obvious because throughout his life, he was described as someone who was precise with his use of words, he was known to be very intelligent, and he something in common with the Giver, which was the pair of pale eyes.
