The Glorious Revolution and Imperial Crisis

Introduction

The late 1600's saw the start of the Glorious Revolution and the beginning of change for economic and political rights in the American colonies. The idea that all individuals have the right to life, liberty and the property was introduced by John Locke. By the late 1700's the colonists found themselves in an economic situation called the "Imperial Crisis". During this time, they not only had to worry about protecting themselves against the French and Spanish, but they also had to contend with the Native Americans.

it started the rebellions of the colonies against the monarchy (http://www.acton.org/libtrad/locke.html). As the colonists got word of The Glorious Revolution in England they started asserting their independence from England and it's politics. Before this time, King James II had refused to recognize colonial charters and gave the colonists no say on laws or taxes (http://www.wsu.edu:8000/~dee/AMERICA/ENLIGHT.HTM).

A New Government

The Glorious Revolution in England influenced the new political views of separation of powers, limited government and religious freedom, laying the groundwork for the Virginia Declaration of Religious Freedom (http://www.acton.org/research/libtrad/locke.html). A group of English radicals known as "commonwealthmen" had a major affect on American politics. They had similar views to the colonists and shared their theories with them.
