Movie trailers, much like any other text, use techniques through their rhetorical form and frame to catch a viewer’s attention. For example, two trailers advertising the movie “2012” have very different content, while still having the same purpose: to get viewers to come see the movie. These two texts use rhetorical form to persuade the viewer to think a specific way towards the movie through images, written text, music, editing, and characters. They also use frame to make viewers think about a disaster in a specific way through tone, tragedy, and emphasizing political responsibility. As the trailer moves through visuals and shows scattered written texts, the music crescendos into cultural music much more powerful than before. Nicole Strauss herself writes, “Throughout the trailer, the ominous background music scares the watcher…and gives anxiety about what situations could possibly happen in the year 2012” (1). Basically, Strauss is saying that the music is a key aspect of the trailer that does have a significant effect upon the viewer. The images throughout the trailer stir up one’s emotions to portray the movie, and the editing between different clips of the actual movie show the best scenes to entice a viewer into wanting to see the movie.
