A Storm of Emotion

Weather, a force of nature, can take a person’s spirits from the top of a mountain and cause them to come crashing down. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby, the weather mirrors drastic changes in emotions and the overall mood of each situation because when there is a major shift in the character’s emotions and mood of the scenario, the weather accommodates the change. The rain, extremely hot weather, and sunshine represent the weather in a way that matches the emotional tone of the characters. and him were together. The two had not seen each other in 5 years and Daisy didn’t even know that Gatsby was there. Gatsby had gone above and beyond in preparation for just having tea with Daisy. He completely fixed up Nick’s house to the maximum which portrays that he has been waiting to see Daisy for a long time, but isn’t sure what she will think of him now that he has so much money. When Gatsby asked Nick to invite Daisy to drink tea he says, “Aware of the loud beating of my own heart I pulled the door to against the increasing rain.” (Fitzgerald 86) The increasing rain is showing the increasing tension in the house between Gatsby and Daisy.
