Gatsby achieved his money through illegal practices and does a good job at hiding it because he distracts you with all the glamor of being famously rich. He believed that because he threw parties and flaunted his money no one would question how he got it all. At first this works, but it ends up being his fatal mistake, literally. In chapter four Nick, the main character and narrator, is surprised to see people " On Sunday morning" returning to Gatsby's house and yelling all about that "He's a bootlegger," (Fitzgerald 61). At first you think this isn't true, how could such a nice guy be a bootlegger? In the midst of the novel we find that Gatsby is indeed a bootlegger and thinks that because he's rich it's okay and daisy will marry him.
