The author implies that just as Gatsby’s Mansion does not fit in, Gatsby truly never fits in either. Fitzgerald’s word choice of “factual imitation” shows that Gatsby’s house is not truly original but a fake, just like Gatsby himself. Later in the novel Nick attends one of Gatsby’s affairs for the first time. Nick explores Gatsby’s enormous mansion and he “[walks] into a high Gothic library, paneled with carved English oak” (Fitzgerald 45). Fitzgerald describes Gatsby’s library as being paneled with English oak to convey the idea that Gatsby himself is English. The author’s word choice of “English” is shown to prove that Gatsby wants desperately for everyone to believe he is from English background.
