When one reaches to attain false realities, the American Dream morphs into a tragedy and crushes the impractical dreams of many. The Great Gatsby embodies this theme in many ways. When the characters in the novel attempt to grasp at things that are superficial, the original dream is corrupted, and the focus and goals of one’s original plan drifts. As Scott Fitzgerald stresses in the novel, the original dream is all about the perception of one’s self, individualism, and the pursuit of a better life. As the story goes on, this dream becomes polluted with money and social statuses.

Just as money and its inability to bring happiness and satisfaction, Daisy represents a hollow need and want that ends up bringing nothing to the table. The readers learns that Gatsby is more obsessed with what Daisy represents more than what she actually is. Daisy represents all the things that corrupt the dream, or so Fitzgerald observes. She symbolizes the money that brings nothing but greed, the uppity attitude and discontent with higher social standings, and the failure to see the dream she is already living.
