The Hidden Society

Throughout the story of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, much of society is hidden from the people's perspective. They live in a world where the goal was to maintain the constant feeling of happiness. This meant that they had things hidden or taken away from them to preserve that feeling. Lenina is unaware of the true condition of her society, such as the relationship norm, the government's control, and everyone's expectation to be constantly happy. This suggests that Huxley thought happiness and truth couldn't coexist.

concern about Lenina's promiscuity causes her to go out with an awkward man named Bernard Marx. Even though Fanny says Bernard's "reputation" is less than desirable, Lenina still decided to go out with him. This may stem from Lenina's unknown unhappiness. She was never fully able to follow her own opinion, but followed the thoughts of others, keeping her feelings locked inside and her happiness at bay.

The ever present rule of the government was the main influence of Lenina's thoughts and actions, suggesting there was no real truth in her life, only the controlling words of the government. From the very beginning of the book, Huxley presents a way for to society control the way you think. Through "electro shock" and "sleeping whispers," one learns their place in society.
