The importance of dreams and dreaming in A Midsummer Night's Dream is made unmistakably obvious through the title. It foreshadows many events that occur in the play, but also create a sentiment of dreams even before the audience has seen the play. Shakespeare evidently structured this particular work around the title, but just as dreams themselves are complex, the concept of dreams in the play is not as straightforward as it may appear. Throughout the play, the notion of dreams constantly recurs as the characters attempt to explain the extremely strange occurrences that happen to them in the forest. After experiencing so much magical mayhem, they use the word "dream" to describe their experiences, because claiming it to be some type of reality would be irrational. The experiences are then able to exist without the characters having to explain or understand what occurred. When Bottom awakens from his adventurous sleep with Titania, he believes that having a donkey-head was just a very bizarre dream. As he states, "I have had a most rare vision. I have had a dream, past the wit of man to say what dream it was," (MND, IV, i, 203-205).
