The power of acculturation can sometimes be hard for immigrant families because of the fear of losing their cultures, values and morals.
The book talks about four different Chinese families and their struggles to keep their children from forgetting their Chinese culture. The first family the book talked about was of Suyuan who was the founder of the joy club and her daughter Jing-mei.
Jing-mei often thinks about how little she knew about her mother. She knew that she disappointed her mother in many ways. For example by dropping out of school and by not adapting to her Chinese cultures like some her mother’s daughters ...

which means that her mother was creating a bond with her that would last even after she dies. Suyuan gave Jing-mei a pendant before she passed however, jing mei never wore it. But now, she finds herself wearing it every day and at times comes to see it as her mother’s love and concern for her.
Suyuan had a troubled past she gave up her twin daughters when they were babies and lost her first husband in the war. Though she married Canning in China and moved to California, she never forgot those babies and spent almost her entire life trying to find them. Even though, Suyuan was at time a difficult mother but she cared for her family deeply.
The Joy Luck Club and everyone misses her after she died. Her husband and Jing-mei fulfilled her greatest wish by finding her twin daughters.
