The Lottery

Shirley Jackson’s sideways approach to her message in “The Lottery” was spot on. First time readers are left guessing the outcome until the very end. Her message was clear, and in very much in line with our context: don’t stand on convention, open your mind to other possibilities.
In the beginning, Mrs. Hutchinson was late because she had to finish washing her dishes. When I think about being stuck in convention, I think about the citizens of Omelas, and the fact that they just continue on with their way of life without much thought as to changing anything. Just like the citizens in “The Lottery,” they are periodically reminded of the horror that they think is necessary to continue on with their way of life, but can not imagine life any other way. I think about the ceremonial elements to the lottery that no longer hold any other meaning to the citizens other than the fact that that is the way the lottery is done, and I think about our discussion about Edward Everett and how he spent 2 hours paying homage to every speaking convention of the day, and still said nothing. It seems that these conventions were nothing but empty actions and empty words.
