The Odyssey: The Qualities That Gain Respect



In The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer, Ancient Greek life is depicted through the trials and tribulations of the Ancient Greeks interacting with the gods. The characters live their lives to please the gods because they fear them. The Greeks highly value good qualities such as intelligence, braveness, and being a mastermind of war. This is why Odysseus, a Greek man, is looked upon so favorably. Odysseus is a man with the good qualities of intelligence, braveness, and mastermind of war that the Greeks and the gods respect.

Another of his favorable traits is his bravery. His wife Penelope says “My lord, my lion heart gone, long ago-the bravest man and the best of the Danaans” (77). Odysseus exercises his bravery escape the cave of the Kyklops. The Kyklops captures Odysseus and his shipmates and prepares to eat them. Then, Odysseus finds a six foot tempered log, sharpens it, and puts it in the fire to make it red hot. When it is hot, he pulls it out of the fire and jams it in the eye of the Kyklops so that “blood ran out around the red hot bar. Eyelid and lash were seared; the pierced ball hiss broiling, and the roots popped” (156). The bravery of Odysseus saves his life in many situations.
