In Polynesia, in the island of Tonga tattooing once symbolized something it symbolized the place that a Tongan held in society. In an article written by Tricia Allen a doctoral candidate in anthropology form the University of Hawaii she talks about the art of tattooing and how it has been lost throughout the years. This was an art that was lost in Tonga because of the contact between the Tongans and Europeans. The Europeans thought of it as something unethical. Before European missionaries arrived to Tonga nearly all Tongan men were covered with tattoos. Women were tattooed also but they were not as eccentric as men. In the article a man of Tongan and Hawaiian roots named Aisea Toetuu was interviewed. Tracy Allen, the author of this asked him many questions of his hobby, which was tattooing. When asked about how he became interested in the art of tattooing the Tongan way Aisea said that it was because of a book he had seen and because he other Americanized Tongans get tattoos (but not like ancient Tongans). He became interested in it so much that he himself started to tattoo himself. He learned the art of tattooing and now does it for a living. According to Tracy Allen, Aisea Toetuu is the first Tongan in over 200 years to actually tattoo himself to the full extent in which his ancestors took their body to.
