The Ride of My Life

It happened the day my family got home from our relaxing trip to South Dakota. My parents were there, along with seven other strangers. I was 17 at the time and was driving on a learners permit. I guess you could say I was a late bloomer. That August day was long and I can’t remember much, but I will never forget the 3 hours I sat panicking in terror.
It was a late brisk afternoon on August 15. We go on one big trip every year and this year was South Dakota. figured it would just be another Sunday night.
No more than 10 minutes away from our destination we passed the Middlebelt exit. I was doing roughly 75 mph in the middle lane. There was no traffic just smooth sailing. The driver of the green Cherokee Jeep in front of us quickly slammed on their breaks without giving me time to think. I had never been in this type of situation before, so without looking in my mirrors or behind me, I drifted into the right lane; where a semi-truck came out of nowhere. I swerved out of the way and managed to hit the green Jeep. A little white car followed behind us and their front bumper ended up under the bed of our truck. The other three cars that were a part of the collision ended up on the opposite side of the expressway and were pretty banged up. The accident itself happened so quickly. It was as if I saw my life flashing before my eyes.
