Gender differences play a huge role in Susan Glaspell's Trifles as depicted by the chauvinist attitude that the County Attorney and the Sheriff show toward the women, specifically toward Mrs. Wright. The play takes place in a time in history when women were expected to be obedient, submissive, and dedicated to the role that was imposed upon them by society back in the 1900s. These women don't appreciate the harsh criticism they were giving to Mrs. Wright, when Mrs. Hale says "I'd hate to have men coming into my kitchen, snooping around and criticizing" (1156). They do not get on the side of the investigation when they find evidence for the motive Mrs. Wright had to kill her husband; instead they try to hide the evidence to protect a fellow woman, even when Mrs. Peters was expected to be on the side of the law because she was "married to the law" (1163), by being married to the Sheriff. They understand how sad Mrs. Wright was feeling, being alone, with her emotions and her feelings being ignored by this "hard man" (1160), who took the only thing that gave her some kind of joy her canary.
