The Send-Off

Wilfred Owen's poem-`The Send-Off'- is also one which focuses on the senselessness of war and futile conflict. The poem shows the reality of young soldiers going to battle; we know this because in the first stanza there is a sense of pressure developing. "Down the close, darkening lanes they sang their way To the siding-shed." The word "darkening" suggests that the setting is during the night, it is also quite pessimistic which helps create an ominous impression. Also, the first stanza metaphorically links to the trenches and it creates a sinister atmosphere showing that the situation is getting worse.

Furthermore, the title of `The Send-Off' is ambiguous, before reading the poem the writer has been clever and emphasised the grim irony within the title. The title shows that `The Send-Off' could be to war or to death. Additionally, the title suggests the effects of conflict becoming more crucial.

Likewise in `The Send-Off', Mercutio's character-in Romeo & Juliet- also plays an ambiguous role. "Ask for me to-morrow, and you shall find a grave man". This quote, said by Mercutio, shows a sense of irony developing, as well as that, it also shows how Shakespeare has played with the words and created this pun.

Moreover, conflict also leads to regret within the tone of some of the poems. In `The Man He Killed', regret is exposed by the speaker after he realises that he has killed another soldier.
