The Sociolect Of Teenage Jocks

“Hey! You gonna’ get loaded after the game tonight? There’s a party
at Joe’s, mad chicks will be there. Come to get some, but keep it on the
DL, it’s for football guys only.” They are full of strength, full of power,
full of conceit. Why do they speak the way they do? Why do they act the
way they do? It is their portrayed image. The image of the ever popular,
ever powerful teenage jocks and this is their sociolect. Jocks are rocks,
strong, rarely broken and without common sense.
Therefore, whether during half-time or in the school corridors, a
jock’s vocabulary level is not excelled, uses exceptional amount of slang

and newer slang including words such as phat which means cool or good. A
jock’s body language consists of numerous slang gestures, for instance the
ever popular middle finger would be a good example, along with the flex of
muscles which would show the tough guy’s dominance and power. Structuring
their sentences by using phrases such as, “You gotta’ problem with me?” or “
Come here," illustrates their incredibly simple, seemingly plain sentence
structure.
Every year, more future jocks come to high school and they are
greatly influenced by the current highly popular big guys on campus. Thus,
a jock's sociolect is dominated by those legends who came before him,
leaving their eternal mark on the rest of the student body. Rocks can be
easily duplicated but maintain some originality. Younger jocks can
immediately pick up on the meager vocabulary level and actions of their
tough predecessors, greatly affecting and evolving their own sociolect.
