While it is typically human nature to be upset, even hysterical at the passing away of your mother, Mersault was not. When asked whether or not he loved his mother, he was unable to assert “Yes, I do love my mother,“ the typical answer to such a question. He could only reply that he “rather she hadn’t died” (Camus 65). Mersault’s actions at Maman’s funeral were caused by his concern not for his mother, but for the sun and getting away from it:
