The Tensions Between Native Americans and the Colonists

In the 1600’s there were settlers coming from Europe, who wanted to settle in America. There were, of course, also Native Americans, who originated from America. At first the Europeans and Native Americans were very friendly, and wanted to trade with each other, and did not wish any harm among one another. Then, due to a series of events, these two groups turned on each other. Why couldn’t the native people and the colonists get along? I believe that the colonists and the natives simply could not get along, was because of how the colonists seemed to want to take native land, how the natives were being unfairly treated by the settlers, and the tensions between the native tribes ...

the tribe, and so that they could all survive. Despite this arrangement, the colonists continued settling on the land that did not belong to them, but rather the Indians. Another example from the Introduction Document is, “When they sold land to the colonists, they believed they were only granting temporary uses of the land. Colonists, however, claimed to own the land outright.” To clarify, this means that the Native Americans were granting the settlers access to their land, but they did not wish for the newcomers to live there permanently.
The second reason I believe that the settlers and natives did not get along was because of how the natives were being treated unfairly by the colonists. One citation to prove this is from Document B, and states, “Some blame it on the unwise desire of Boston magistrates to convert heathen Indians into Christians before they were civilized.” This shows that these colonists were trying to convert the natives to be more like the settlers, ...
