The Theme Of Conflicts In Barn Burning

William Faulkner’s short story, “Barn Burning” deeply illustrates many different conflicts. Conflicts endured by a father and son, along with significant characters in an era where social class and inequality affect morality and loyalty. This suspenseful, coming of age story takes place somewhere in the “deep south” of America soon after the Civil War. The main character, Colonel Sartoris Snopes better known as Sarty, is a ten-year-old boy and son of Abner Snopes. In the opening scene Abner Snopes is held in a courthouse for allegations related to the crime of arson against a local farmer’s barn. it does not state he is hungry, from these suggestions it concludes his desire for food which also suggests his family is in poverty. This is a significant statement as poverty is considered an important theme around the story.

The acknowledgement of blood is evident in this short story as it is mentioned several times. Sarty was not only smelling cheese, but “the old fierce pull of blood” (Faulkner) as well. Following this line Faulkner first introduces Abner, which proposes the idea that Sarty is referring to the blood bond he has with his father. He sees this connection as of importance until his father states “You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain’t going to have any blood to stick to you” (Faulkner). Abner is not only threatening his son with this statement, but implying that he is responsible for keeping his father alive. This is the first of lines introducing the main theme; loyalty to your family versus loyalty to the law.
