The Train Station

The benches at the railway station are newly varnished. Dragging my finger leaves a trail on the satiny smooth surface of the wood. I inspect my finger-no trace of varnish. Surprising. A teenager desecrates this workmanship by sticking a stringy piece of yellow gum on the underside of the bench. The teenager casts no shadow on the floor as he strides to the ticket window, slinging his backpack over his shoulder using his index finger. I do not cast a shadow either. It's the lights at the station-subdued and even-ringing an ornate and domed ceiling. The ceiling is painted a dark crimson-almost brown, some would say-with ecru trim. that my train is on time. The 3:15 to "Anytown" is delayed; the 3:34 to the "Land-of-Goodness-knows-where" has been cancelled. My train's announcement is preceded by a door-bell-gong. I get up. Stretch. Lift my valise, fingers curling and tightening against the hard plastic of the handle. I walk to the escalator that will take me to the platform. One woman hesitates before the revolving staircase. She is old. Beads of perspiration dot her tremulous upper lip as she tentatively puts her foot forward; her arms swing out and waver for balance.
