In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie’s love life involved playing the stereotypical house wife. Everything she did was either some type of chore or an answer to a command. Her first marriage was against her will and forced upon by her grandmother. Then Jody Starks came along and painted the picture of an ideal husband. Jody gave her everything except a place in the world as an individual. Janie would have always been known as Mrs. Jody Starks if he had not passed away.
