In those years he started to write. He
published “Lord of the Flies” (1954), “The Inheritors” (1955), ‘Pincher
Martin” (1956), and “Free Fall” (1959). In 1983 he was awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize. His last book was published in 1995. He died in Wiltshire,
England in 1993.
In the first novel William Golding wrote, Lord of the Flies, is the
story of a group of boys of different backgrounds, who are stranded on a
island after there plane crashes. The boys try to come together and
organize an certain type of government, but that doesn’t work and they
began to separate. “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey
them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are
best at everything. So we’ve got to do the rught things.” (Jack pg42) The
boys turn to there evil and primitive nature, like hunting and killing.
The bringing up of the boys was a civil one, and they had the strong sense

being savage. In Lord of the Flies and The Inheritors has two
tribes fighting against each other to demonstrate that man is in control if
his own destiny. “ Thigns are breaking up. I don’t understand why. We
began well; we were happy. And then-...Then people started getting
frightened” (Ralph pg82) At the end of The Inheritors, one of the new
people leaders killed the Neanderthals just like the boys killed Simon in
Lord of the Flies. This is another example of Golding’s darkness in man’s
heart into his novels. No one in the story takes responsibility for doing
