When Chinua Achebe was writing the book, Things Fall Apart, he had just read and thought about the poem written by William Butler Yeats. The book has many similar qualities and many of the things in the book symbolize objects in the poem. The problem has gotten out of hand, they cannot stop the new wave of change in the way the tribe handles its business. The missionaries are the gyre; spinning the tribe out of control, unable to stop in its tracks and go back before it is too late. The book has a lot to do with this first line and its meanings.
