Thirty Years War

The thirty years war was one of the most destructive wars with an estimated five million deaths. There were many causes of the thirty years war. The Thirty Years War can be split into four phases. When the war ended, there were many effects that it had on the people.
The war began in 1618 in the Kingdom of Bohemia and ended in 1648. At first it was a struggle between local Protestants and Catholics, but eventually it became a fight among political rivals. The balance of power in Europe played a significant part in the Thirty Years War. The war was fought in primarily what is now Germany and involved most of the European powers.

created by Albrecht Von Wallenstein, a Bohemian nobleman who had become one of the richest men in the empire. By 1627, Wallenstein’s army began to conquer the northern region of the empire, the last major center of Protestant strength. Ferdinand issued the Edict of Restitution in 1629 ordering the restoration to Catholics of all territories they had lost to the protestants since 1552. When the princes realized that Wallenstein was a threat to them, they united and forced Wallenstein out of power in 1630.
The third phase is from 1630 to 1632. The year 1630 was the year of change for the Protestants. Frances’s king was Catholic but he was willing to join with the Protestants to undermine the Habsburg power. In 1631 the French allied with Gustavus Adolphus of Swedan. Ferdinand recalled Wallenstein to fight the battle at Lutzen in 1632. Gustavus was killed which saved the Habsburg Dynasty.
