Three Different Avengers, Hamlet, Fortinbras, and Laertes

For most of Shakespeare’s plays, revenge is predictable: it occurs in the way and at the time a reader anticipates it should. For example, when Macbeth kills MacDuff’s family for MacDuff’s alleged disloyalty to him by escaping to England, or when Othello kills Iago for making him believe his wife was unfaithful with Michael Cassio, the reader knows that those acts would not go unpunished. However, Hamlet is differentiated from those other plays in that three characters, the three sons of powerful men who were killed, Hamlet, Fortinbras, and Laertes share the same goal of avenging their fathers’ deaths. steeped in religious belief that the devil seeks to tempt individuals to their eternal damnation, is wary about actually taking revenge on his father’s murderer, Claudius. He is uncertain about the veracity of the ghost he observed on the rampart; therefore, he plans a scene in a play that will reenact the murder of a king in an attempt to arouse Claudius’ true emotions and ascertain his guilt. Unfortunately in his desire to be certain that Claudius is indeed guilty, Hamlet spills other people’s blood in the process of his achieving his revenge.
