To Air Condition or Not

In Florida, only 10 of the major prisons have some portion of their facilities equipped with air conditioning (Florida Department of Corrections), a luxury that most Floridian’s cannot do without during the scorching summer heat. If you do the crime you have to do the time, but does this statement justify that the time spent in prison should be in an inhumane and cruel setting? It is easy to answer that question with a firm yes because of some of the horrific things that some inmates do, and therefore the retribution feels justified. Although, is it not just as morally wrong to make a human being suffer because we feel that it is deserved?

After becoming informed about the Stanford County Prison Experiment, I had a better understanding of where I stood on this issue.

The Stanford County Prison Experiment was a study that was performed in the basement of the Stanford University psychology department building. The experiment was to study the psychological effects of being a prison guard or an inmate. Twenty four students were chosen at random to become either the prisoner or the prison guard. As the experiment progressed, the prisoners felt dehumanized and began to forget that they were not genuine prisoners, but only subjects in a psychological study, the guards became ever more sadistic, seeing the inmates more and more as the enemy and deserving of the treatment they gave to them.
