To Kill A Mockingbird: courage

Would you stand up for what you believed in even if that meant standing alone? Courage is doing the right thing when everyone else is not. Harper Lees book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” consisted of a town full of racism. When a black man, Tom Robinson is blamed for rape, the town accuses him of being guilty. Only a few in the town looked past the color of Toms’ skin. Harper Lee illustrated the theme of courage through the actions of Mr. Cunningham, Jem, and Atticus.

He took his friends with him and departed. Mr. Cunningham subconsciously knew he was doing something corrupt and it took Scout to remind him about Walter to rethink his choices. This opened the new door for the trial because Mr. Cunningham ended up being a juror in the case. After the verdict, the Finchs found out Mr. Cunningham was the reason the jurors took hours to decide whether Tom Robinson was guilty or not. While the jurors were contemplating their decision, Mr. Cunningham was the only person who actually thought about all the evidence and got the other jurors to think as well. It took one individual from the court case to forget that Tom Robinson was black and to vote based on the proven facts. He spoke up and was the reason why the verdict did not end as quickly as expected.
