Twelve Monkeys Analysis

Director Terry Gilliam's 1995 movie Twelve Monkeys is a dark, apocalyptic warning about the dangers of unchecked materialism and corporate greed. Gilliam's satirical and moody film clearly outlines man's misuse of natural resources, the potential misuse of biotechnology, and the need to care for the earth's creatures. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the film is the increasing plausibility of a biological disaster in a modern world where warnings about biological warfare seem to be growing more strident and urgent with each passing day. The final message is clear: unchecked and irresponsible materialism may lead to humankind's ultimate demise.

Gilliam shows that a society that is driven solely by greed and the desire to create huge profits can be horribly irresponsible when it comes to the health and welfare of the world's citizens. The dangers of unchecked corporate control of such potentially dangerous substances are clearly outlined in the film, as corporate irresponsibility ultimately leads to the destruction of over five billion lives, and the end of humankind's dominion over the earth.
