Kazuo Ishiguro’s story “A Family Supper” is a story in which the son that has been living in the United States for the past two years come back to Japan to visit with his father and sister. They all have gathered to have a dinner on this “sunny autumn” [night] (567) . There are unanswered questions that lie in this story. Did the father make the same fish for dinner that killed their mother? Does the family live or die at the end of the story? What are the father and son’s names? Kikuko and her brother take a walk outside to the garden to get some fresh air and catch up. Kikuko began to tell her brother how Watanabe killed himself and his family after the firm closed down. As they were standing there Kikuko’s brother saw something standing in a small clearing. “It was an old woman and she was wearing a white kimono and some of her hair had come undone and was blowing around a little” (570). They go over to the clearing to see if someone is there and there isn’t anyone there. In my opinion the reason that the son saw his mother in the garden is because she wanted her son to know that she was happy he came home and she forgives him and doesn’t blame him for what happened between them.
