Characteristic of Stanley Kubrick's film repertoire, Lolita employs subtle innuendo and dark comedy to convey uncomfortable moods and circumstances. Sexual relationships between adult men and teenage girls were even more of a taboo subject in 1962, the year in which Kubrick produced Lolita. His version of Vladimir Nabokov's novel is respectful of the social climate of that era, which probably influenced the film's script and cinematography. The sexuality in Kubrick's Lolita is retrained and tense, just like the relationship between Humbert (James Mason) and Lolita (Sue Lyon). total emotional dependence. When Humbert tells her, "You know, I've missed you terribly," Lolita replies, "I haven't missed you. In fact, I've been revoltingly unfaithful to you." Humbert's interactions with Lolita grow increasingly pathetic as the story progresses, and the film's tone darkens in response. Humbert's character toward the beginning of the film is lighter-hearted, whereas his acute loneliness pervades the latter portion.
The sexuality of pre-teens is a subject that is difficult to broach in any era, and Kubrick does an excellent job of translating Nabokov's novel onto celluloid. While personal reactions to Lolita will doubtlessly vary, few would find the film outright offensive. Treatment of Humbert's obsession is gentle and compassionate, even humorous.
