Do you agree trades and agricultural skills are all someone needed and not university education and voting rights? Two leaders of the black community in the late 19th and 20th century were W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington. However, they sharply disagreed on strategies for black social and economic progress. W.E.B. DuBois' views contradict Washington's because he believed in higher education. He did not agree with Washington's idea that African Americans had to work for economic equality to be accepted socially. An example of this contradiction is when DuBois stated, "We ourselves are workers, but work is not necessarily education." What W.E.B. DuBois wanted was very clear. He outright said that he wanted equal rights and that African Americans had to fight and protest to achieve them. To work behind this idea of protest, DuBois founded the Niagara movement, and later helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP. The NAACP worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for civil rights. W.E.B. DuBois also clearly stated that he wanted voting rights for African Americans.
