In the lived, non-fictional reality of today's present, many individuals such as the African-American politician Representative Charles Rangle of New York City have called for the reinstatement of the draft policy. These individuals claim, with some justification, that the recent war in Iraq has been waged with largely minority hands, with the sweat of people driven to serve out of economic necessity and a desire for vocational and educational opportunities. Dodson's mother weeps for a son whose death is only for a nation that hates him. The poem focuses on those left at home, while King parallels the boys fighting in war in Vietnam with the young men of the inner cities fighting at home, both for a freedom of a kind, but both ineffectively.
