What Is Love?

According to the Encarta Encyclopedia, love is an emotion that is “explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God.” Although there are many variations as to the real meaning of love, this definition of love captures mostly all of ingredients that love is made up of. Romantic love, the fraternal love of others, and the love of God, are the various types of love as seen in our world today. Every one of us is familiar with either of these kinds of love.

The other definition of love is the fraternal love of others. A person loves their family, and their friends. This kind of love is more common. Every one is familiar with this sort of love. For example, a child usually loves his or her parents. This part of love has also been written about through out history. The great literary genius, Shakespeare, wrote entire plays tackling this subject (Encarta, CD-ROM). One of the more famous examples is Macbeth. Again, this sort of love is different to different people. I might love my family in a way that someone else will not. However, fraternal love for others goes beyond family. One can also love his or her friends. Many of us have best friends and although we might not declare that we love them, we do.
