Being a gentleman does not depend on the social standing of a man. It is the decency in his behavior which makes him a gentleman. A gentleman is someone with a solid foundation of manhood, who has gone on to refine and culture himself and his understanding of the world beyond the minimum requirements needed to function in society. Being a gentleman comes into play when you incorporate such traits into how you handle the world around you. extending your sensibilities beyond yourself, and becoming a man not just of strength, but of respect, especially to women, and being understanding.

A gentleman is someone who does not take advantage of his power or the weakness of those around him. He is a man who does not manipulate others into doing things against their will. A gentleman never offends others physically or mentally, nor does he inflict pain on others. A gentleman is the one who cares for the people around him, helps them with their problems, and strive to remove every obstacle that distracts their lives. Easing and comforting everyone around him remains the major concern of a gentleman.
Personally I think the underlying trend here is to just be considerate to other people, use good manners, treat people with the same dignity and respect you would expect afforded to you, and give people common courtesy.
